Magnetic window cleaner

Levi had bought a magnetic window cleaner online. The problem, however, was that the magnets that came with it were not strong enough when it came to a window with a thickness of more than 10 mm. This meant that the two rails that the window cleaner consisted of fell down and could not clean Levi's windows. Of course, that was not what was intended.

Levi was determined to find a solution and therefore contacted our customer service. We arranged for him to come by so we could test different magnets for the window project. There were several variables that had to be taken into account. There were 2 recesses in each rail and the magnets should preferably be able to lie there. It required us to test some windows in order to find the right magnets. It had to be easy to clean windows, without the rails falling to the ground or it being difficult to push the rails around.

The bearing capacity is weakened when there is distance

< p>The more distance there is between the two rails, the weaker the magnetism. At 5 mm. distance, only 8% of the carrying capacity remains (measured in a straight pull). Therefore, there can be a big difference in which magnets you need when your window is 15 mm. versus 10 mm. The project therefore required strong magnets.

The rails had indentations of different sizes (one lower than the other), so for one rail we had to use magnets with a smaller height. In each rail there were 2 recesses so that we could distribute the load capacity. We tested a few different magnets and arrived at the following solution:

In rail 1: We chose to put a power magnet 20x20 mm. into each recess and put a power magnet 20x15 mm. on top. We did this because it was not enough with only one power magnet in 20x20 mm. – and we thus increased the carrying capacity by putting a magnet on top. 

In rail 2: In the lower rail we used a power magnet in 20x15 mm. in each recess. 

Result = a strong magnetic window cleaner

The result was a magnetic window cleaner that could easily be pushed around on the window – and did not fall down. We tested on our pane, which is approx. 18 mm. and therefore fit well with Levi's window of approx. 15 mm. Levi was satisfied with the result and is looking forward to trying the solution on his own windows at home.
