Magnetic paint and magnets

Choosing magnetic paint: You can buy magnetic paint in many stores, but remember that price and quality are usually related. And thereby cheap magnetic paint often becomes more expensive than the high quality paint.

Explanation on why cheap is more expensive: you have to paint several layers of the cheap magnetic paint to get an OK result (5-7 layers), which requires much more paint than if you had chosen the good quality one from the beginning. And each layer has to dry for 12 hours, so it also takes unimaginably much longer to paint with the cheap version. And the result is often sharper with high-quality paint than the cheap one. The reason is, among other things, that there are more and better magnetic chips in the "expensive" paint can than in the cheap one. And in the end, it can be really expensive in magnet purchases because ordinary fridge magnets rarely stick to a surface painted with a poor quality product.

Remember to read our FAQ about painting with magnetic paint, where we give tips and tricks on how to paint - but also how not to paint.

Magnetic paint contains iron powder

Magnetic paint consists of small magnetic chips (iron powder), which is why magnetic paint is only available in a grey version. For optimal results, we recommend 3-4 coats of our magnetic whiteboard paint, because with each coat more magnetic chips are added to the wall, and the magnets thus stick better to the finished painted surface.

It is possible to paint a coat of regular paint on top of the magnetic paint, if you want to integrate the magnetic surface with the room, for example, so that it is not so visible that the wall is a magnetic whiteboard. For each coat of regular paint you put on top of the magnetic paint, you must first paint an extra coat of magnetic paint.

Choosing magnets - they must be strong

When choosing magnets, it is important to know that magnets only use a fraction of their maximum load-bearing capacity on a painted surface, because it is not a smooth magnetic surface but a surface painted with iron powder. It is therefore important to use powerful power magnets. We cannot recommend ferrite magnets if the magnets are to be able to carry anything other than their own weight (e.g. as decorations) - also known as "souvenir magnets".

Choose magnets of 1.5 kg. (or more)

All our power magnets over 5 mm. can be recommended for magnetic walls. Remember, however, that very small magnets are also very difficult to handle... Our personal recommendation is to choose magnets with a strength of at least 1.5 kg.

If you are looking for a stylish look, we can recommend our colored power magnets, which are available in many different colors. For office environments, we can recommend our powerful Boston Xtra magnets and our magnet pockets. And then there are also all the fun magnets to give a completely different expression to the wall.

It is important to emphasize that magnets are not for children due to the risk of choking and damage to organs if swallowed. So if the plan is to paint a wall in the children's room, we recommend our magnetic photo pockets.
