Magnets and washing machines
Most washing machines are made of magnetic materials. To avoid damaging the parts of the washing machine, we recommend that you wash clothes with magnets in a laundry bag. In addition, you should wash on a gentle cycle and avoid washing at temperatures above 80°C, as the magnetism is destroyed by high heat.
** Even with this trick, it is not that easy to sew on magnets with a sewing machine, as many parts of the machine are magnetic. If in doubt, we recommend sewing on magnets by hand.
Magnets for clothing
No matter what you are going to use the magnets for, avoid sewing through the air bubble or the weld all the way inside the magnet. As long as the pocket is tight around the magnets, the magnets can withstand both washing and light impacts. This is especially important when using magnets for clothing, as a pair of pants with a magnetic closure is not worth much if they cannot withstand a trip in the washing machine.
How to sew with magnets
There are many blogs online about DIY sewing with magnets. But it's actually not that difficult if you follow these 3 easy tips:
Make sure to pair the magnets with + and - facing each other (they are clearly marked on the edge of the plastic on each side). All of our variants are paired with both a north and a south side.
Double check that the magnets are facing correctly so that they attract instead of repel before you sew them to the fabric.
If you are sewing with a sewing machine, we recommend that you place a small piece of oblong cardboard on the side where you will move the magnets during sewing, so that they do not easily stick to the magnetic metal parts of your sewing machine.
Note! It can be difficult to sew magnets with a sewing machine, because sewing machines have many magnetic parts. It can certainly be done, but if it bothers you, we recommend that you sew the magnets into the clothing by hand instead of by machine.
