Most people have experienced being surprised in the shower by a shower curtain that is a little too close and sticks insistently to your legs. Several customers have asked us about a magnetic solution for this, so we have made this DIY for you, so you can get rid of a sticky shower curtain. And the solution applies to both small and large bathrooms - so also in the summer house and caravan.
Big problem - easy solution
Some guides suggest heavy shower curtains, weights at the bottom of the curtain, or better ventilation in the bathroom to solve the challenge. But weights are clumsy, and the hot temperature and airflow in the bathroom cannot be solved with ventilation only.
Instead, use rubber magnets.
It sounds easy... because it is!
You don't even have to make holes in your nice shower curtain, and you don't have to find a sewing machine either. Because the magnets stick magnetic to each other. In addition, you avoid rust, which metal rods and weights develop over time. And the magnets come in many colors, so you can find the one that best suits your shower curtain (neutral or colorful).
We recommend rubber magnets for several reasons:
- Rubber protects the magnets from rust
- Rubber protects against impacts, so the magnets last longer
- They are easy to grip even with wet fingers.
Solution 1: Magnets as weights
Our first tip for avoiding sticky shower curtains: use two magnets at the bottom of the curtain to add weight. If the curtain only bothers you in the middle, you can make do with a single set. But if it just sticks to your entire body from all angles, you might want to consider using 2 or 3 sets (i.e. 4 or 6 magnets). This will help the curtain fall straight down and not be pulled in towards you as easily when you shower.
When you order more than 1 rubber magnet, we deliver them with small spacers to make them easier to separate - because they are quite strong. That is the small white part you can see in the first picture at the top of the page.
The magnets are relatively heavy for their size. How close you need to place them depends on the weight and thickness of your shower curtain, as it takes more weight to hold a heavier curtain in place than a very thin, lightweight curtain.
How many pairs of magnets you need will also depend on the width (and, as mentioned above, the weight) of your shower curtain. If it is narrow and thin, 2 or 3 pairs may be enough. If it needs to go almost all the way around in a circle or cover an entire side of a bathtub or weighs a little more, you will need to get more pairs.
This is how you do it:
Place a magnet on each side of the shower curtain along the bottom at the frequency and distance you want, and voila - you're ready (we promised it was easy).
NOTE: The magnets are very strong. This means that they will tend to attract each other when several pairs are hung on the same shower curtain. So don't hang them too close. But also be aware of this when you pull the curtain aside, because they will gather in a lump. So we have one more trick; because you probably have a metal rod that the curtain hangs on, and here you can attach the magnets when you are not using the magnets as "weights". But you can also use them to gather the curtain neatly on one side or to hang it to dry around the rod if you have a small bathroom, so it takes up less space. And you don't have to worry about the magnets colliding, because they can easily be separated again, and they won't break from the collision due to the rubber coating.
Solution 2: metal plate on the wall
The second solution consists of a metal plate on the wall and a rubber magnet of the same size on the other side of the shower curtain. This method works well on smooth tiles and clinker, where the metal plate can stick well to the surface, but it is not so good for textured walls or on an uneven surface.
You will need this:
NB! If you only want the solution on one side of your shower enclosure and have a very light and thin shower curtain, a set of 1 metal plate and 1 magnet may be sufficient. If the shower curtain is to be attached to two sides, you will need two of each - one set for each side.
This is how you do it:
Make sure to clean with with isopropyl alcohol on the surface where the metal plate will be attached - soap and water or rubbing alcohol will just leave a film, so it is important that you use isopropyl alcohol before gluing, otherwise the glue will not cure properly. We recommend that you place the metal plate approx. 10 cm. above the bottom edge of the shower curtain.
Remove the protective film from the adhesive side of the metal plate and press the plate firmly onto the wall. Leave the metal plate for 48 hours before using it - this ensures the best effect and durability, because the adhesive has been allowed to harden properly.
Tip: When the solution is not in use and the shower curtain is pulled off, you can just leave the magnet on the metal plate so you don't have to keep track of where it is.
