How to choose the correct magnet hook

Sådan vælger du den rette magnetkrog

Hanging wires

You should always consider whether the thing you are going to hang up is sensitive to magnetism. But most wires today can withstand quite a bit, as there are magnetic fields everywhere.

If you want to hang up a string of lights on the terrace, for example, you can just use some of the small 10 mm magnetic hooks. There is no need for great strength, as the weight of the wire is distributed over several hooks. And wires don't weigh down as much as, for example, a calendar (see below about hanging up calendars).

Hanging plants

It depends a lot on whether you are going to hang vines or large pots of plants, for example, or whether it is a good idea to choose a magnetic solution at all.

You can easily hang vines with magnetic hooks. Or, for example, fix climbing plants with magnets. And if you have a greenhouse with a magnetic skeleton, it is a really good idea to use magnets for that. You just have to be aware that the magnets rust over time in humid and wet environments - i.e. in greenhouses and outdoors.

If you are considering using magnets to hang large plants, we would directly advise against it if there are any that you could fall under. Because even though the magnets maintain their strength for more than 80 years before there is a minimal measurable change in their strength, it plays a big role if the plants move, or if they are overwatered or something else that makes them too heavy to be held up with the magnet you have calculated that you will need. There is too much risk for it to be a good idea. But if they are to be hung, for example, on the windowsill, where they cannot harm animals and people, then a magnetic solution can be used. However, you must contact us for a calculation of the strength requirement, as there is no standard for calculating this. But we can tell you that you will probably be surprised at how strong a magnet is needed if the magnet is to be placed horizontally and the plant is to be hung vertically.

Magnetic hook for calendar

Unfortunately, we experience that many people end up buying a magnetic hook that is too small when they are going to hang up a calendar. We usually make a big deal of telling you that an indirect pull means that you need to use a MUCH stronger magnet. But here are some guidelines for what to choose:

  • When something weighs downwards, you should multiply the weight of the item (i.e. the weight of the calendar) by 4. If the item is larger than the diameter of the magnet x 100, you should multiply by another 4 - i.e. x8 in total.

A small calendar in size A5 or smaller does not weigh as much downwards as if you were to hang up a large family calendar, and you can therefore make do with a hook magnet of 13 mm with a strength of approx. 5 kg.

A large calendar in size A4 or A3 has so much weight downwards that the magnet's magnetic field is challenged. Therefore, you need a hook magnet of 20 mm or larger. But the 20 mm magnet can usually easily hold an A4 family calendar hanging. It has a strength of about 13 kg, and that sounds like a lot, but it is a strength that is measured in direct pull - i.e. where both the magnet and the item to be hung point in the same direction. And that is why you should go up to size Ø25 mm, if you have an A3 calendar. With a calendar, you typically have the magnet horizontal but the calendar vertical. And that requires as I said, a certain strength.

Need help calculating your strength requirement?

This is not the only test we have done. We also have a test with towels, bags, keys, etc. here.

We are always happy to test for our customers, because that is the most exciting part of our work. So please contact us if you have a project where we need to help you determine the strength requirements and magnet type. We are available by phone and email every weekday during opening hours.

You will find a small selection of our magnetic hooks below, and you can see the entire collection here.
